How to Actually Win Matches in 30mph Nebraska Wind

By Aden Ingwerson | Hastings College Men's Tennis

If you play tennis in Central Nebraska, you know the drill. You check the weather app, see "15 mph with gusts up to 35 mph," and realize today's match isn't going to be about pretty tennis. It's going to be a dogfight.

Most players hate the wind. They complain about it during the warmup, they get frustrated when their toss goes sideways, and they mentally check out by the third game. But if you know how to adjust, the wind isn't a nuisance—it's your biggest weapon.

1. Stop Trying to Hit Winners

When the wind is howling, the margins shrink. That flat, down-the-line winner you love hitting? The crosswind is going to push it four feet wide. In heavy wind, you have to prioritize spin and margin over pace. Use heavy topspin to pull the ball down into the court, and aim for the middle thirds of the court rather than the lines.

2. Footwork is Everything

The ball is never going to be where you think it's going to be. You can't take long, lazy strides and plant your feet early. You need constant, choppy, micro-adjustment steps right up until the moment of contact. If you watch the pros play in the wind, their feet look like they are vibrating. That's what you need to do.

3. Weaponizing the Toss

Serving in the wind ruins more amateur matches than anything else. Here is the secret: lower your toss. A high, looping toss is just a kite for the wind to play with. Shorten your motion, lower the toss, and accept that you're hitting a 70% slice serve instead of a 100% flat bomb. When you have the wind at your back, kick the serve—the wind will carry it entirely out of the opponent's strike zone.

4. The Mental Game

Before you even step on the court in Holdrege or Hastings on a windy day, accept that you are going to hit some terrible shots. The wind will catch your frame. You will completely whiff a volley. It's fine. Your opponent is dealing with the exact same wind. The player who accepts the ugly nature of the match and stops complaining will win 9 times out of 10.
